               ASCENSION ISLAND

The 1st Ascension Girlguiding Units celebrated their World Thinking Day on Saturday 20th Feb.  The actual day is 22nd February but due to leaders’ work commitment we brought it forward.  Each year there’s a theme in which we perform to represent World Thinking Day.  This year the theme was Hunger and Poverty.  Thinking Day is very important to Girl Guides and Boy Scouts as it is the birthday of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell the founders of Guides and Scouts.

To celebrate our way on Ascension all three units – Guides, Brownies and Rainbows with their Leaders were driven to Green Mountain National Park where each unit organised a game for all to participate.  We then had hot dogs and plate of eats to share before the ceremony. Mrs. Linda Yon our Commissioner led the ceremony by speaking about the work of Action Aid and use to sponsor 2 girls one in Bangladesh and one in Uganda. They are both grown up now and left school so she continues to support projects in their villages.  This sponsorship by Linda touched our hearts to know how fortunate we are to be living our lives so carefree.

Brownies and Rainbows lit candles and recite words for various needs of children all over the world.  Christiane led a prayer on hunger and poverty, praying for Guides around the world, also remembering our sister Guides on St. Helena and for all Leaders of Guides, Brownies and Rainbows, who without their dedication these 3 units would not be in full force.

Linda then enrolled Diana Stroud as Brown Owl; we sang Kum Ba Yah and concluded the ceremony with end of day TAPS from each unit.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Robert Constantine and Nicky Benjamin our drivers of the day, TBS and IDL for the loan of buses, parents for the plate of eats and CSR for the delicious Thinking Day Cake.
