The Transfiguration

Jesus had a close relationship with his disciples and he often took them with him, especially Peter, James and John.  When he went up the mountain to pray it was these three he took with him that day.

In St. Luke’s Gospel we are told that when Jesus prayed the aspect of his face changed and his clothing became brilliant as lighting.  Moses and Elijah, appeared in glory and were talking to him.  They were speaking about Jesus passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem.  Although the three disciples were heavy with sleep they kept awake and saw Jesus glory and the two men standing with him.  As they were leaving him, Peter spoke to Jesus “Master, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” Peter was still speaking when a cloud came and covered them with shadow. When they went into the cloud the disciples were afraid.  Then a voice came from the cloud saying, “This is my Son, the Chosen One.  Listen to him.”

Although this might have been too much for the disciples it was an experience they never forgot. They told

no one what they had seen.

From now they knew Jesus to be far more than they had first thought of him as just a man. His transfiguration showed them as well as us that he is God’s Son.

Have a pleasant week
