Ascension : From St Mary's Church
Submitted by The Islander (Clive & Jenny Duncan) 28.01.2010 (Article Archived on 11.02.2010)

There is nothing like going home to visit family and friends after being away for a long time.

Jesus must have felt the same way when he returned to Galilee and went up to Nazareth, his home town.

As was his custom he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. The people who knew him had heard about all the good things he had done and were eager to hear what he had to say in his first hometown sermon.  When he stood up to read he was handed the scroll of the prophet Isaiah.  He found the place where it is written: The Spirit of the Lord has been given to me for he has anointed me.  He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour.  Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the assistant and sat down.  And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to speak to them, “This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen.”

Jesus still comes to us and speaks to us.  It is for us to listen what God has to say and what he wants to tell us.

Enjoy your week
