Ascension : Heritage Notes
Submitted by The Islander (Shari Parkhill) 14.01.2010 (Article Archived on 28.01.2010)

The members of the Heritage Society have been very busy over the holiday season. All 20 of the WWII US Army signs have been put in place.

...SO if you spot little white signs on your travels, take a moment to remember what the men who were here during WWII contributed to the island!  Thanks to Mike Birkett, Gene Austin, Mike Doherty, and Ryan Backhouse for helping with this project.

Four of the five new letterboxes are also in place!  Water’s Edge, Dampier’s View, Shelley Beach and Bird Cave all have the boxes and books in place.  At this moment we still don’t have the actual stamps made up, but photocopied renderings that can be pasted into your books are!

This Sunday at 8 am we will be hiking up to Goat Hole Ravine to put the last letterbox into place.  If anyone would like to join us, we will be meeting up on the North East Bay Road at Power Pole 53, about 2 miles down the road from Two Boats.  It is a bit of a tough climb but we’re going to take it slow!

The direction pole in front of the museum has also been completed, with the city signs being added.  Thanks to Ryan Backhouse and Wil Frey for helping to complete the project,a nd to Gene Austin for finding the pole in the first place!

We’d like to welcome back Ben Juhl who is back for a month and helping us out!

We are still in need of volunteers if you have any time to spare!

The members of the Ascension Island Heritage Society would like to wish all our fellow islanders a very Happy New Year!
