Ascension : Heritage News
Submitted by The Islander (Shari Parkhill) 10.12.2009 (Article Archived on 24.12.2009)

The new opening hours on Monday evening have been a success as we’ve had quite a few visitors during this time.

Drop by and visit and while there you can do a little Christmas shopping!  We have new sweatshirts and are hoping that our new windbreakers will arrive this week!

The WWII US Army sign project is almost complete – only three signs left to be put up of the original twenty.  A big thank-you to Mike Burkitt for making the signs, and for Mike Doherty, Gene Austin and Ryan Backhouse for being brave enough to go off-roading with me to some pretty remote and supposedly inaccessible places on this island!  It’s been fun, flat tire notwithstanding!

The direction pole has been erected outside the museum courtesy of CSR.  Many thanks go out to Stevie Bowers and his crew for helping out.  We have the bearings figured out so hopefully the actual city signs will soon be attached!

We will be ordering a few more signs in the Heritage & Conservation series next year.  Some of the sites are a second Roll Call of the Dead at the site of the old US Cemetery, Turtle Turner’s Hut, Two Boats and One Boat.   If anyone is interested in sponsoring any of these signs either wholly or partly, please let us know.  They are about £150. each.  The Turtle Turner’s Hut has already been sponsored!

We are desperately short of volunteers!  If anyone is interested in joining us in preserving and conserving the history of this fascinating little island, we would love to have you on board!  Just drop in during opening hours or call me at 2455.

We hope that everyone has a great holiday season!    Shari
