Ascension : From The Golf Club
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Editors) 03.12.2009 (Article Archived on 17.12.2009)

Well, it’s been a fair old while since One Boat Golf Club submitted an article to the Islander, so I thought I’d give it a go…

Well, it’s been a fair old while since One Boat Golf Club submitted an article to the Islander, so I thought I’d give it a go…

This weekend saw another passing of an era for the Golf Club, we held a 3-Man Texas Scramble in honour of one of our longest serving members, Lawson Henry, who will sadly be leaving us this week for the cooler climes and actually GREEN greens of St. Helena.  We had a good turn out of competitors, although some only just made it due to being slightly hung over from the wedding celebrations the previous evening!  21 competitors in all teed off at 8:30 under glorious sunny skies.

On returning to the Club after 18 fairly steady holes, I could feel the tension within the crowd… “How many points did these old Sand Baggers end up with?” it was practically written on everyone’s forehead J

Paul, our score keeper, soon established that none of the teams managed a 2 to claim the ball pool – we should be ashamed!  So it was decided that a Chip-Off would decide the winners – nearest the pin on the 18th from the Club House.  There were a few valiant efforts, and some complete disasters with balls ending up in the rocks about 6 feet away (you know who you are)!  Others, of course, got a bit too excited, sending their golf balls half way down the 10th fairway – maybe a few too many beers had been consumed by this point.

A series of “Ooohs” and “Aaaahs” could be heard as Lawson skilfully placed his ball nearer the pin than anyone else had managed thus far, this was quickly followed by Errol, whose ball appeared to be about the same distance from the pin as Lawson’s.  Norman’s attempt looked pretty good, but Paul quickly dismissed it from the running.  The final player to make a decent attempt was David Skipper with a nice little chip that rolled perfectly up towards the pin.  After much pacing up and down from ball to hole and back again, counting footsteps as he went, Paul awarded 1st Place to David Skipper – winning him 12 balls, closely followed by Lawson who’s ball was ½ a step further, which gave him a stash of 9 balls.  Well done gents!

Next it was on to the main event, which team had scooped the victory?  There was much banging of the hammer as our attention was requested (I think Paul was getting a little power trip in the absence of our usual leader, Mr Dover).  Firstly, prizes for the Longest Drive on the 11th, this was won by Alan Bedwell (who cunningly hid the flag behind the electricity pole) and nearest the pin on the 12th which was taken by David Skipper (although, as you know, his team still couldn’t manage a two!!)

Anyway, the scores were in and it was evident that a good round was had by all as the scores ranged from a low of 47 up to 53.  2nd Place went to Lawson and his band of Merry Men, Chelsea Pete and Don Hoffy with a very respectable 52 points – Pete would’ve been glad to know that his footy team were going to manage one better than his golf team later on that afternoon! J

The winners trophies however, went to Adrian Sim, Darren Benji and Kerry, of course there were jealous taunts of “Handicap Cut!!” and other remarks that I can’t print in the Islander, but it was a well deserved victory – our visitor, Benji, was determined to get a trophy from OBGC to take home with him so that’s mission accomplished.

The afternoon was rounded off with a delicious curry lunch, which Auggie (who isn’t Ugly!!) couldn’t wait to get his teeth into, and some sweet karaoke serenades by our very own Frank “The Don” Sinatra and Stormin’ Norman amongst others.  Finally, we’d all like to thank Lawson for being such a fantastic member of the Club and for all the generous contributions he’s made over the years and we wish him all the best for the future – at least someone else will be in with a chance of winning the Open next year!

Cheers for now
