Ascension : Flipper Trophy Knockout Competition – Week 1
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Internet Editor) 05.11.2009 (Article Archived on 19.11.2009)

The 8th running of the annual Flipper Trophy began last weekend; the tournament is run as a dedication to the memory of Andrew “Flipper” Bennett and Sunday’s game began with the players and officials standing around the centre circle and being joined by the crowd in observing a minute’s silence.

A Stroud double puts Harts into next week’s semi-final

Wanderers 1    v    Harts  2

As is normal, kick off time was 4 o’clock “Saint time”, about 4.20 in reality.  Although the Press did not arrive until after 4, I knew I wasn’t missing much as one of the players was still in the Saints Club at the scheduled kick off time, yes Aaron Peters, I saw you!

The game started in front of a small crowd (don’t any of the players have girlfriends? – I actually had to concentrate on the football for a change!) with the Wanderers playing in red while the Harts wore the colours of the Premiership’s runaway leaders, Chelsea!

The action started with Cardinal Green nearly getting through on goal but the high ball from midfield raced ahead of him and was collected by Damian O’Bey, the Wanderers Keeper.  Mario Williams then tried to put Cardinal through but the Harts’ striker was beaten by the bounce of the ball as it went beyond him for a goal kick.

The Wanderers replied with a shot from Ashley Dutch which the Harts’ Keeper, Darrel Henry managed to turn away for a corner.  The corner was swung into the penalty area and Neil “Dicker Boy” Lawrence fired his shot at Darrel who skied the ball into the air on the left of his area before running across his goal, eventually getting the ball clear with his second punch.

Anthony Young then made a good run through midfield and was fouled.  Melvin Moyce took the resulting free kick for the Wanderers sending the ball just wide of the far post.  At the other end Melvin made a defensive clearance, but only into the path of Mario Williams who drove his shot wide.  Leon Williams also shot wide for the Harts.

Cardinal Green barged Dicker Boy off the ball but then had his cross intercepted by Damian O’Bey.

The goal-less first half ended with Cardinal shooting at Damian.

The second half began with “Chocolate” completely missing the ball after making an almighty swing at it.  Then the Wanderers’ Dane Wade went on a good run through mid-field and was rewarded with a corner which came to nought.

Melvin then took another free kick; the ball rebounded off the chest of Darrel leading to a goal mouth scramble from which the ball was eventually cleared.

Harts opened the scoring when Jeffrey Stroud fired in a shot from the wing which only just beat Damian.  The Wanderers should have equalised when Dicker Boy passed the ball out wide to “Tweaky” who crossed to Ashley Dutch who managed to head the ball wide when it looked easier to score.  At the other end another chance went begging when Mario Williams shot at the Keeper after Yannick had cleared the ball into the path of the Harts’ player.

The Wanderers equalised when Ashley Lawrence produced a long throw-in to the far post where Anthony Young nodded the ball home from close range.

Cardinal was then substituted by “Rocky” Stroud who scored the winner for the Harts by walking the ball into the net after Melvin had failed to make his clearance, allowing “Rocky” to run past Damian and sheppard the ball home.

Man of the Match was JJ Buckley for his defensive work.

The Wanderers put pressure on the Harts for the rest of the game but to no avail, so …

this coming weekend VC Milan will play the Retards on Saturday and Dream Team will play this week’s winners Harts on Sunday, both games will be played at Long Beach and will start at 4pm (ish!).  Come and support the teams and the tournament.
