Ascension : THE ASCENSION ISLAND LIFE BOAT - IT’S A LAUNCH!

On Monday the 26th January the new Ascension Island Life Boat impressively completed its first trip safely around the harbour. The purpose of the trip was effectively to ‘prove’ both the boat and the equipment to ensure that all of the operating systems were in place and working correctly prior to the visit of the Royal Navy instruction team. I can confirm that all was a brilliant success – and grateful thanks to all who helped.

This is a new ‘Delta’ Lifeboat which arrived on island just before Christmas. The boat itself and its associated equipment has meant an investment by government, on behalf of the community, of about £75K. The RAF has also invested about £60K for the provision of inflatable life rafts etc. Also there will need to be further planned infrastructure investment by government in the financial year 04/05 for a lifeboat shelter etc. We hope that the crewing of the boat will be mainly by the Island Fire Department - but with help and support from local volunteers.

The RAF and Serco have kindly coordinated formal training for the lifeboat crew and the team of Royal Navy instructors will arrive on Island on the 18th February for about 10 days. This is being supported free of charge by the Royal Air Force, with Serco providing administration and support to the instructing staff. Other agencies are providing training equipment on loan or at minimum cost to facilitate this training. Other island partners, including the Agency have also offered help with launching etc.

Cannon Clive kindly blessed the boat prior to its ‘first dip’ before a small team of helpers. It has been agreed that a more formal ceremony of dedication will be completed upon his return from leave in February.
