VACANCY FOR A YOUNG WORKER

The Ascension Island Government has a vacancy for a Young Worker.  Applications are invited from interested young persons (both males and females) between the ages of 16 and 17 years old.  The age range is restricted because the term of any engagement is limited to 2 years and will cease upon the person attaining the age of 18.  The scheme is specifically designed so that a young person is “better fitted and experienced to undertake, in later life, employment in areas of his or her own choosing.”

No specific skills are required but the person must have a reasonable standard of education and a satisfactory school report (copy required).  He/She must be capable of assimilating training in; building, electrical work or plumbing work, Health and safety and first aid.  An applicant with special aptitude or experience in these areas will be a prime candidate for this post.

Terms of engagement will be similar to that of a household status contract, which means that no accommodation or allowances will be provided.  It is therefore expected that the trainee will be living with parents.  The successful applicant will be expected to undergo a satisfactory medical examination before formal engagement arrangements are put in place.  Normal working hours will be 08:00 – 16:30 hours with 1 hour for lunch.  There will be a 30 day leave entitlement per year.  Salary is in Grade 1 which starts at £3,710 pa.
