CSI – ASCENSION
There is no doubt many fans reading this of the CSI TV shows. Modern advances in Forensic Science have not passed Ascension Island by, and the Police Dept as been quick to use some of techniques now available.
These techniques have been used in the prosecution of persons driving over the prescribed limit. There have been recent cases through the local Magistrates Court where drivers have claimed they were under the limit at the time of driving, but had been drinking after they had been driving. By using established forensic techniques to analyse the driver’s blood or breath, scientists can back calculate to the time of the driving incident and prove that the driver was over the prescribed limit at the time. This technique is widely accepted by many courts inside and outside the UK.
You may say ‘well don’t provide a specimen of blood urine or breath’. If you fail to provide a specimen to a Constable when requested, you commit a separate offence of failing to provide with which you will be charged. When you appear before a court they can treated it the same as if you were over the prescribed limit.
