Week 28

20/04/09

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Swim Gala

Congratulations to Beale team on winning the Swim Gala on Thursday last week.  There was a lot of great competition between the teams and everyone really enjoyed the day.

In particular thanks go to Mr Duncan, Mr Tobin, Miss Andrews, Mrs Augustus for organising the event, Mrs Angela Yon and Mrs Tracey Yon for life guarding, Mr Clarke for the scoring, Mrs Tobin for updating the score keeper on the results of each race, all the time keepers and house marshals and everyone else who helped out.  Thank you to Raymond for ferrying everyone around on the day.  Once again Johnny did a great job on the commentating keeping all the teams actively involved.

Summer Term Dates

Please find attached the dates for activities taking place this term.  There are a few changes from the original issued in September.  There are also some bank holidays to be aware of.

Please note that school will be closed to children next Wednesday 29th April for staff training to take place.

School Term Dates 2009 – 10

Please find attached the term dates for 2009 – 10.  As you are aware the RMS is going into dry dock next summer and so we will be having the longer holiday at Christmas to allow staff the opportunity to go to St Helena.

When booking your family leave please be aware that students who are in years 10 and 11 will be taking formal GCSE exams in January and May/June.

Staffing

This week we welcome Mrs Ferne Clarke to the school staff. Mrs Clarke will be working as a teaching assistant.

GCSE Exams

The final Art exams take place this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The Spanish speaking exam takes place on Thursday morning.  Mr Denny will be the examiner for this exam and many thanks go to Mr Denny for helping the students to prepare for the exam.

Art Club

During this term, art club for middle school will take place on Tuesdays after school.  The group have been very enthusiastic and enjoy using their time to develop their own skills and ideas.  We have some exciting projects for this term!  If you would like to be a parent helper, Mrs Birkett is looking for a volunteer so please contact her if you would be able to help out sometimes.

Nursery Places

It is the time of year when we start to look forward again to the next school year.  The advert for applications for Nursery places for September 2009 will be in the Islander this week.

Primary Challenge

The primary school will all begin their new SEAL (social and emotional aspects of learning) topic this week which is ‘Relationships’.

When we think about ‘family’ there are many people we are related to or consider as part of our wider family even though they are not blood relatives.

Please can you draw and label all those you consider to be part of your family – that is all those who love and care for you even though they may not be directly related or may live far away.  Even pets can be included in your ‘family diagram’.

Mrs Birkett

Wet Friday

Many thanks to all parents, families and friends who helped out on Friday when the heavy rains came.  In particular to AIG for their prompt response to our request for sand bags.

Yours Sincerely,

Soo Matthews

Headteacher
