Ascension : From the Constables Desk
Submitted by The Islander (Gavin Yon) 15.01.2004 (Article Archived on 29.01.2004)

This is our first activity report for this year and we are off with a flying start.

This is our first activity report for this year and we are off with a flying start. One male person was given a Formal Caution for causing Criminal Damage to a dwelling house and its surrounds.

As wheels are in motion we will be conducting a number of campaigns with the use of the Radar Speed gun. Training has been delivered and to include a new vehicle fitted with a calibrated speedometer. To ensure that the radar Speed gun is operating correctly, a measurement is taken from this vehicle and the speed should register on the speed gun, to indicate that the recorded speed is accurate to that of the vehicle. Speeding of vehicles on the island is a general concern, in particular the School area. Effective for a month from the 1st February, we will be showing high visibility presence in areas of concern where speeding is predominant and is likely to cause a danger to other road users.

The maximum speed limit for Ascension is 40mph. On certain roads it is less:

Georgetown                                              20mph

Two Boats                                                20mph

Travellers Hill                                           30mph

Main road past U.S.A.F Base                  30 mph

We have set criteria when dealing with a speeding motorist.

For example.

KILL YOUR SPEED NOW

A Vacancy still exists for the post of a part-time Special Police Constable.  The Specials are valued part of a police team. As one of new recruits you will initially patrol, either on foot or mobile, with regular officers. You will gain experience in the basic of police work and the emphasis will be on familiarising you with the role, wearing the uniform dealing with people and incidents and generally increasing your self confidence and ability.  Training will be given to help provide the theory to the practical role.  You will work alongside regular officers and therefore will be called to any incidents that require police attention. As such you can be cited to attend Court to give evidence on incidents you have attended.  As a Special Constable you will have the same powers as regular officers while you are on duty, and you will help with any of the tasks that regular officers perform. You will be carrying out a valuable role- supporting both the police and the community.  It’s truly a different experience, both challenging and rewarding working alongside your local constabulary. Some individuals find it beneficial to join as a Special Constable in order to gain an insight of the work of a regular Police Officer before committing themselves to the full role You will experience the values of what we can offer in making your island a crime free place to work and live. Therefore I hope that we succeed in retaining your interest, and motivating you to pursue a worthwhile vocation. If you are interested do drop by the Office for a chat and apply within.

Now its time to put on the brakes as my posting will soon come to a grinding halt. This is my last report before I am off to winter land in the UK at the weekend. Ascension has brought about new challenges for which I have formed part of. The cooperation and support that I received from the community was overwhelming. I take this opportunity of thanking my colleagues for all the support they have given me and hope to return in the not to distance future.
