Ascension : Weather Screen installed at Weather Post.
Submitted by The Islander (Met Office) 26.02.2009 (Article Archived on 12.03.2009)

A new addition to the Ascension Island letterboxes at Weather Post appeared this week.

A new addition to the Ascension Island letterboxes at Weather Post appeared this week.

Dan Boon and John Hill from the Met Office trekked to Weather Post with a Stevenson Screen. (white louvered box used for weather measurements).  Dan Boon can be seen carrying the screen in the photo left.

Inside the screen there is a thermometer and a diary, all those that make the trek to Weather Post are requested to take a temperature reading off the thermometer then record their reading in the diary supplied. It would also be helpful to record their own weather observation detailing weather conditions at the time of their visit.

The screen, shown on the right with Dan Boon and John Hill, will make an interesting addition for all those who make the trek to Weather Post.

It is hoped that, while the Met Office remains on Ascension, Met Office volunteers will replace the diary each year for future “letterbox” hunters to make their own weather observations.

We look forward to seeing the weather observation entries from all Weather Post visitors. Thanks to Ascension Island Conservation for giving their permission.

Dan Boon & John Hill 20th February 2009
