Excellent news emerged from a recent meeting of the Executive Council with the approval of a new health and social services strategy for St Helena.

Excellent news emerged from a recent meeting of the Executive Council with the approval of a new health and social services strategy for St Helena.

Councillor Bill Drabble, Chair of the Public Health and Social Services Committee presented the strategy, entitled “Focusing on the Future” which will guide the Public Health and Social Services Department in the years up until 2012.  Carol George spoke about the purpose of the strategy and answered questions from Members. Speaking after the meeting she said “the approval of this strategy is extremely good news for the department and for the people of St Helena.”

Carol explained that the Department For International Development has agreed to inject almost £2million into the project, subject to certain milestones being achieved throughout its implementation. The St Helena Government is grateful for this investment, since it will allow staff in the department to focus on the six key areas that form the backbone of health and social care services on the Island. These areas are: helping the population to be and to stay healthy; delivering high quality primary and community care; striving for the best possible clinical services; supporting children, older people and others who are vulnerable; sustaining a strong and effective infrastructure; and developing and improving systems and services within the department.

The strategy will start with raising awareness in the community about the benefits of healthy living. The strategy’s objectives will be met without affecting the department’s other core services.

SHG will give regular public updates on progress with implementing the strategy.
