Press Release

Policy Approved on Landholding on St Helena

The Governor in Council has approved a policy on landholding by immigrants. This policy is linked to the recently approved Immigration Control Ordinance 2008.

Attorney General, Ken Baddon said that the landholding policy had been issued as a guide for prospective visitors, settlers or investors who might be interested in purchasing and owning land on St Helena.

The policy notes that land on St Helena is scarce. Therefore, land can only be sold to investors if they get a licence from the Governor in Council.

“Applications will only be approved if selling the land is in the public interest” said the Attorney General. He added that this is a protective measure. This means that while St Helena is keen to open up to inward investment, land will still be preserved for the people of the Island.

The policy gives an outline of who is exempt from needing a licence and how to apply.

Copies of the policy are available from Essex House in Jamestown.
