Ascension : Heritage Notes Submitted by The Islander (Shari Parkhill) 04.12.2008 (Article Archived on 18.12.2008)
The past weekend found the guys moving more furniture. A.I.M.S. kindly donated some work tables and shelving units which have been moved into the old garage in the fort.
We are setting up a workshop in there. Thanks to Caz Yon for the kind donation of these items!
The goat skulls that were discovered by Danielle Yon, Stedson Stroud and Elizabeth Hill are now displayed in a beautiful case designed and built by Melvin Moyce. Come along and see these important artifacts. The goats had been left on the island so that there would always be a supply of fresh meat for passing ships. The last goat was killed many years ago, so these skulls are at least more than fifty years old. All of us at the Heritage Society want to thank Melvin, not only for this lovely case, but for all his time and efforts over the past year in building us all sorts of items. He takes our suggestions and requests and turns them into much more than we imagined!
Pete and Jill continue to catalogue the photographs and other archival materials. If anyone has any time to spare to help them out, it would be greatly appreciated. They can be found most days in the archives building beside the Fort Hayes Gallery.
The Ascension Island Heritage Society is sad to say farewell to Ed Kerslake, who has volunteered for several years, and has been an important member, serving as both Secretary and Treasurer during his time with us. We would like to extend heartfelt thanks for everything Ed has done for the Society, and wish him, Nicky, and the children the very best on their new adventures back in the UK. Ed has kindly offered to continue his efforts for the Heritage Society and will be haunting the archives of the UKHO in Taunton, searching for old maps and related materials on Ascension Island. We can’t wait to see what he finds for us! Farewell and good luck, from all of us in the Heritage Society!
