Ascension : CONSERVATION WEEKLY Submitted by The Islander (Conservation Office) 04.12.2008 (Article Archived on 18.12.2008)
This week the Conservation Department bids farewell to Phil Lambdon, Botanist from Kew, who has been here working under the Invasive Species Project doing a plant survey around Ascension.
Thank you for all your hard work; it has been a pleasure working with you.
Visitors we will be having this month are Colin Wearn and John Hughs from the Army Ornithologist Team, coming out to do their yearly counts and ringing of the Sooty Terns, they will be working with our Seabird Restoration team. Also we will be having a tour group visiting from overseas, so please note that the office will be close through certain periods.
Note: The Conservation Office will be closed on Thursday 4th December.
REMINDER: Did you know that the sooty terns are nesting again at Mars Bay?
Now that the sooty terns have returned and are nesting throughout Mars Bay, please DO NOT DRIVE down to Mars Bay. If you drive to Mars Bay, you will crush the eggs and disturb the nesting birds. You may park at the Wideawake sign and walk down to view the birds. Better yet, you can book a personal tour to see the birds through the Conservation Centre: x6359.
