Ascension : News From St Mary's Church
Submitted by The Islander (Clive & Jenny Duncan) 20.11.2008 (Article Archived on 04.12.2008)

A large number of people gathered outside St. Mary’s for our annual Remembrance Service on Sunday 9 November to honour the fallen from the two world wars, the Falklands War, Iraq and Afghanistan.

His Honour the Administrator laid a wreath on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and our Island Community.  Wreaths were also laid on behalf of the British and American Forces, The American Legion,  The Police service, Ascension Island Detachment,  Island Council,  Scouts and Girl Guides and for the first time a wreath was laid on behalf of Interserve Defence Limited.

Thanks to all who assisted with the preparations for this Service.  The Ascension Island Government for transporting the chairs and labour to erect the two marquees. The RAF for arranging the wreaths and poppies.  The colour bearers, Johnny Green for setting up the PA system and the music.

It was nice to see the uniformed organisations all looking smart and as usual assisting with the collection and for helping to move the pews after the service.

Your help was greatly appreciated.

Canon Clive.
