Ascension : 1ST ASCENSION GIRLGUIDING
Submitted by The Islander (Cheryl Anthony) 13.11.2008 (Article Archived on 27.11.2008)

There has been a very busy schedule for the Girlguiding Movement since the start of our “New Movement Year”!

There has been a very busy schedule for the Girlguiding Movement since the start of our “New Movement Year”!

The Guides had a late start due to holiday commitments but once they got on the way from 31st October everything has been “all go”!!!   We even gained a twin – Megan and Nicole Benjamin.  31st October brought the Guides and Scouts Movements together in their annual Joint Halloween Fancy Dress Party.  This took place at the Garden Cottage with the Haunted House having set up by the Scouts at Red Lion.  Guess who didn’t dare enter it?????  Not frightened of the “spookiness” but of any cockroaches lurking outside the archway!!!!!  Once the competition was out of the way, the spread of food fit for any army was enjoyed by all and then all parties went to the Haunted House.  With the rain drizzling and the fog right to the ground this was such a great night for our Halloween Party.  The winners were:-  Scout – Headless Man (Collin Low-Hong), Guides – Battered Bride (Gemma Yon) and Humped Old Woman (Robyn Bowers), Cub – Red Faced Devil (Dominic Augustus) and Beavers – Lil Devil (Mike Greentree) and Battered Punk Rocker (Thomas Herne).  Well done everyone for dressing up and having a great time.

With the Halloween out of the way now come the time for Guy Fawkes.  The Scouts do the honours in organising this evening, which was held at the Long Beach Football Field.  The AIG stacked the wood to make a huge bonfire for the Guys.  The field had spectators from all over the island.  There was a Guy competition, drinks flowed and hot dogs to munch on while watching the beautiful display of fireworks.  Thank you Johnny Hobs, Leaders and Scouts for a great evening.

Friday, 7th Nov Kirsty Anthony was enrolled as a Unit Helper.  Kirsty is one of the “Old Rainbow, Brownie and Guide” and she was a Young Leader once she became 15 yrs of age, but left us to go to Chichester College for two years.  On her return she decided she still wanted to be with us.  Congratulations Kirsty from all at the Girlguiding.  Shalane Thomas has followed in Kirsty’s footsteps as she is now on her way becoming a Young Leader.  She has proven herself at Guides even taken a whole Guide meeting in which she supervised a Go For It called “Fitness” with myself taking a back seat.  Over the next 6 weeks she will be attending Rainbow meetings where she will be assessed by their Leaders.

Remembrance Sunday saw all the Colour Parties together once more and this was at our Parade to the Church.  The day started off lovely and cool but half way into the service the sun decided to shine very brightly but thank God no one felt as hot as previous years.  The shelter for the Colour Parties was great and it did stop the little ones from getting restless.

The Girlguiding Movement got a lot to look forward to in the forthcoming weeks before we break for Christmas – there’s Community Service (cleaning of the Georgetown cemetery), Cancer Awareness Coffee Morning, baking mince pies, Carol Singing and Christmas Party.

Until the next time…………………………….. Watch this space………………………
