Ascension : ASCENSION ISLAND GOVERNMENT - VACANCY FOR Conservation/Sea fisheries Officer

Ascension Island Government requires a Conservation/Sea Fisheries Officer to lead the work of the Conservation Department in implementing the Environment Charter in accordance with established strategy.

 



The candidate will lead and manage a small but diverse team of specialists, support staff and volunteers and implement and manage established monitoring programmes.


 


The duties of the post will include the following:



  • Leadership of a small but diverse specialist team

  • Local and international project management 

  • International funding sourcing

  • Managing and developing public awareness programmes

  • Managing and developing scientific monitoring and research programmes

  • Supporting and developing on island ecotourism

  • Take an active lead in the day-to-day protection of wildlife and wildlife habitats through advocacy and the creation of legislation

  • Encourage the acceptance and implementation of National Protected Areas Legislation and co-ordinate the creation and development of these NPA’s through management plans.

  • Consult with local and international authorities and attend international conferences representing Ascension conservation interests

  • Coordinate the control of invasive species in areas of biological or geological interest

  • Coordinate issue of fishing licenses

 


The successful applicant should:


·         Have a Postgraduate Degree in a related subject



  • Have Experience in project management

  • Have experience in staff management

  • Feel comfortable with  public speaking

  • Have database management and GIS skills


  • Have outdoor field work experience (experience working on small islands would be a bonus)

  • Possess a valid driving licence for cars and landrovers.

 


The post, which reports to the Administrator, is offered as accompanied status for two years in the first instance. The salary for the post is £20,000 per annum and an accompanied allowance of £5,456.00 per annum is also payable. Rent free accommodation and utility allowances will also be provided.
