The New Banana Bridge was officially opened on Thursday by Roy Haley the Director of Technical Services (representing the Administrator) and Lt Col Alex Hilton from the Royal Engineer.

The existing bridge was built in 1982 by the forces resident on the Island during the Falklands conflict. The bridge was built at the air head and air lifted to site by Chinook helicopter. The bridge had unfortunately corroded and become unsafe and had to be closed last year.

The old bridge was removed a new bridge has been built by the 73rd Engineer Regiment

during this year’s Exercise Turtle Truss. The material was provided by AIG and the Engineers have done a superb job in constructing the bridge. This was a major achievement because they did not have the advantage of air lifting the equipment to site, every piece of material had to be man handled to site and then assembled on site. This included the large beams that form the support for the building.

Special thanks go to Warrant Officer Jason Brookes and his team of Engineers who carried out this project and several other tasks while they have been on the Island.

Mr Roy Haley

Director of Technical Services
