Ascension : Conservation Weekly
Submitted by The Islander (Conservation Office) 23.10.2008 (Article Archived on 06.11.2008)

It was noticed that some Green Turtles tracks were on Long beach last week, it’s a little early for these amazing creatures but not unusual, and December will see the beginning of their breeding season.

Also the Sooty Terns (Wideawakes) are nesting at Waterside Fairs and Mars Bay.

They are rather earlier also, a change from their normal breeding cycle. Since the sea bird restoration Programme started there have been many successes of seabirds nesting on the mainland, hopefully in time the Wideawakes will stay on Ascension through out the year.

The Conservation Centre will offer tours out to the Wideawake Fairs and at nights to see the turtles nesting.

But if you decide to visit the Fairs/turtles with out a tour guide then please take care not to disturb them.

We will inform you nearer the time concerning tours.
