Ascension : C&W finally win something in the Flipper Trophy! Submitted by The Islander (Islander Internet Editor) 02.10.2008 (Article Archived on 16.10.2008)
Before the final, in a desperate attempt to win something, the Cable & Wireless staff challenged the Rest of the Island to a mixed match in which no guys were allowed in the 18-yard area and only the girls could score (now that sounds like Ascension!)
Cable & Wireless 3 v 3 Rest of Island (CW win 3 v 1 on penalties) C&W Team
Before the final, in a desperate attempt to win something, the Cable & Wireless staff challenged the Rest of the Island to a mixed match in which no guys were allowed in the 18-yard area and only the girls could score (now that sounds like Ascension!)
Johnny Hobson was refereeing in 1920s style shorts and while trying to make all these rules clear to the players assembled in the centre circle he had to book both Geraldine Constantine and Denny Leo (who wasn’t even playing!) for dissent.
For C&W Gary Robinson hid behind his camera, up on a raised platform to avoid playing where as “Gussie” Augustus made a one-off return from retirement having last played in 1991!
The game started with Janet Thomas trying to block C&W’s kick-off!
C&W were soon in the lead as Anita Stevens got onto a pass from Tracey Yon and bored down upon the RoI’s Keeper, Dorris “Kimbo” Yon before slotting the ball past her into the corner of the net.
Dorris blocked Anita’s next shot before my woman-of-the-match Geraldine Constantine equalised for the RoI; CW failed to clear a free kick, the ball rebounded off Stacy McDaniel and Geraldine pounced on the opportunity, easily beating “Chocolate” in C&W’s goal.
Kirsty Anthony then crossed to Geraldine who had her shot saved by “Chocolate”.
At the other end Anita found herself clear on goal but fired wide and then after good work wide on the right Tracey crossed to Anita who skied the ball over the bar.
At the other end C&W’s Captain Carrie Augustus cleared away from Kirsty before Sergeant Steve took a free kick for the RoI from 30 yards which Elaine Thomas cleared into her own goal passed Cecile who had replaced “Chocolate” in goal. Poor “Chocolate” was the first player to be substituted as his old body simply could not keep up with the pace being set by the girls!
Dorris’ next goal kick for the RoI went straight to C&W’s Caz whose shot went half way between the goal and the corner flag! Caz’s next shot was blocked, only for the ball to fall to Anita who scored her and C&W’s second goal.
Marita Maggott replaced Cecile as C&W’s Keeper and cleared the ball from in front of Geraldine, and then C&W’s Tracy was booked before having a shot blocked for a corner.
 Rest Of The Island Team
Shanade Thomas replaced Dorris in the RoI goal, but Dorris must have forgotten this as she handled a shot from Caz. Anita stepped up for the first of the day’s many penalties and duly completed her hat-trick, putting C&W back in the lead.
At the other end Johnny put his tea in jeopardy by booking Cecile after the C&W defender seemed to try to pull Geraldine’s shorts down. Geraldine hit the resulting penalty straight at Marita.
At the other end and after some good work preventing C&W from scoring Shanade swapped shirts with Kirsty who replaced her in goal. There was a pause before I wrote this down - as your diligent Reporter wanted to ensure he didn’t miss any of the details for you!
Once fully dressed, Kirsty collected a shot from Caz and caught a high cross from “Spud”.
Alan “Pickie” Stevens was then sent off for the horrendous foul of stepping inside the 18-yard box; Shanade initially missed the penalty but scored once Johnny had insisted she took it again – the Ref was doing a good job engineering a draw!
Gussie was red carded for tackling a girl and the game ended three each and went to penalties.
Kirsty was in goal for the RoI and Marita for C&W.
Elaine scored CW’s first penalty, the ball going in off the cross bar.
Shanade replied with a shot into the left corner.
Tracey restored C&W’s advantage by hitting the ball high into the net.
Janet had her shot saved by Marita.
Cecile kicked her penalty straight at Kirsty.
Dorris hit the ball wide.
Caz scored off Kirsty’s legs for C&W’s third penalty and Sara hit RoI’s final penalty over the bar.
Before the final I spotted DJ “Smudge” getting high ……... Gary Robinson took “Smudge” for an up-and-down ride on the elevated platform from which he was filming. I bet not many of you thought I was going to end that sentence the way I did!
