Ascension : Heritage Notes
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Internet Editor) 02.10.2008 (Article Archived on 16.10.2008)

The Heritage Society celebrated Elizabeth Hill’s tenure with us with a dinner at Fort Hayes last Tuesday night.

The Heritage Society celebrated Elizabeth Hill’s tenure with us with a dinner at Fort Hayes last Tuesday night.  We enjoyed the lovely meal supplied by the Tasty Tucker, and watched the sun go down.  We thanked Elizabeth for her dedicated service, and presented her with a few mementos so that she won’t forget her time with us!  Thanks for everything, Elizabeth.

The work has continued on the Archives building.  Lots of hours have been put in scraping the floor, and getting the interior of the building ready to paint.  Once the painting is done, it will be time to move everything back in.  A special thanks goes out to Ben Juhl who has put so much time into this project and manning the museum.  Ben leaves to return home to Florida this week, but he’ll be back after Christmas.

The Ascension Thrashers have been resurrected this past week.  Gene and Shari started clearing Warpath trail of the guava that is threatening to overtake it.  While a lot still needs to be done, it was a good start!

The Ascension Heritage & Conservation Trail Board No. 7 “Georgetown Forts” mentions a gun being placed on the “Tartar Stairs”.  Does anyone know where these stairs are?  Please let us know.

The Heritage Society has unfortunately lost a number of its volunteer members lately as people have moved on to new places and new challenges.  If you are looking for an interesting way to spend a few hours, we’d love to have your assistance.  We need volunteers to open the museum for two hours on Saturdays, and anyone who wants to help with any of our other projects would be greatly appreciated.  The heritage of Ascension is fascinating, and working to preserve it is both important and enjoyable!  If you can spare a few hours now and then, please contact one of the Heritage board members!
