Ascension : DEMOCRACY – ASCENSION STYLE
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Internet Editor) 02.10.2008 (Article Archived on 16.10.2008)

British democracy—Ascension style—is simply unappealing to the taxpaying residents of Ascension.

British democracy—Ascension style—is simply unappealing to the taxpaying residents of Ascension.  Thanks to the FCO, it is widely considered a farce as civil servants have simply made a mockery of elected representatives in the past.  However, the fact that our community has nominated candidates for the upcoming elections indicates an element of optimism for progress even though the uncertainties of just what can be achieved are immense.  If the October elections are successful, it remains to be seen if the elected representatives will again be trampled by the excessive dominance of FCO involvement in local affairs.

As I appreciate the encouragement of those that support both my right to choose and decision to stand for councillor, I also fully understand the criticisms of my decision to do so.  There is a firm belief that attempts to restore democracy on Ascension is entirely about the UK Government wanting to be seen promoting democratic principles on Ascension; hence for many residents there is a refusal and reluctance to become involved.

The FCO Minister, Governor and Administrator have all urged the electorate and taxpayers of Ascension to give democracy another chance and choose elected representation.  I believe by doing so, the true meaning of taxation through representation on Ascension Island will be established by October 2010.
