Ascension : Year 11 Work Experience Part 2
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Internet Editor) 02.10.2008 (Article Archived on 16.10.2008)

For my work experience I worked for Cable and Wireless, Ascension Island Police, and Serco.

Joshua Rodger Reports - My work experience

For my work experience I worked for Cable and Wireless, Ascension Island Police, and Serco.

At Cable and Wireless I did such things as voice switching, coin and card phones, portable appliance testing, GIS mapping servicing providing, Wi-Fi network, Ariane and the earth station. I done so much it is hard to describe it all but I thoroughly enjoyed.

During my stay at the police I experienced writing witness statements, fingerprints, CSI, foot patrol, cell duties, walky-talky and other things. This was very interesting and showed me how the police work and help the community.

The last place I worked was Serco, as a motor technician. This work place improved my skills and confidence when working on vehicles. We had a variety of working experiences and the food at the mess was excellent. The work was very practical as in I got to work hands on. This work place is the one I enjoyed the most.

Dane Wade Reports -

For my 3 weeks of work experience at Base motor pool, AIG motor pool and Interserve Bench joiners.

I have learnt how to develop new skill and solve problems. At base I never learn much because they had to go work ship. I mainly work with Pete at the AGE shop at the air head taking out fuel filters and oil filters out the fire truck.

At AIG I learn to take out time belt, change starter, change ignition key and

put new tries on rims. I mainly worked with Mark at AIG motor pool.

At Interserve Bench joiners I learn to make benchers. I mainly worked with Gavin and Avon.

I would to say a very big thank you for letting me work at your company. I would like to return in the future.

My name is Dane Wade I am a year 11 student at Two Boats School.

Shalane Thomas Reports -

For my work experience I went to the Base Clinic, Interserve Stores and IP Networks at Cable and Wireless. I enjoyed the week I spent at all three placements learning about what they do and joining the other workers and doing some of the work myself.

In my first placement at the base I learned how to do different tests on blood and I also got my own blood taken.

In my second placement at Interserve I served some costumers and also helped with the stock check they do.

At Cable and Wireless I learned the different parts of a computer and about the running of Internet on Ascension Island. I also went to visit the Earth Station. I feel I have benefited from this experience as I now have a better idea of what I want to do in the future as I embark on my final year of schooling.

I would just like to thank the three companies for allowing me to do my work experience with them, and last but not least, a huge thank you to all the people I worked with who gave me a warm welcome, and took the time to tell me a bit about their different jobs.
