I’m afraid I’ve had to be tasked in providing you with the report on Saturday’s Football game for the Flipper Trophy Knockout Competition as our “Roving Reporter”
Dear Readers,
I’m afraid I’ve had to be tasked in providing you with the report on Saturday’s Football game for the Flipper Trophy Knockout Competition as our “Roving Reporter” did an early session at the Saint’s Club and then couldn’t resist indulging in his Saturday afternoon siesta. Nevertheless, he did show to report on Sunday’s game amidst the teasing and bantering of the on-lookers regarding a silly shirt that he was wearing – serves him right!
Retards’ victory of 5 – 0 leads them into the Flipper Final.
Retards 5 – Dream Team 0.
The Flipper Trophy Knockout Tournament which is sponsored by Cable & Wireless and run by the employees as a dedication to the memory of their work colleague Andrew “Flipper” Bennett continued into the second week with the first Semi Final taking place on Saturday 20th September with the players and officials standing around the centre circle to observe the one minute silence.
The game soon got underway and shortly after ‘kick-off’ an early handball was given by Carlyn Yon.
An early shot was then taken and missed by Ryan Backhouse.
Martin Andrews gave away a corner in which Denny Leo took an excellent corner with a pass that was met by Martin Henry who did a superb header into the Dream Team’s goal leaving goal-keeper and players standing around helplessly and admiring the awesome shot. It was an early goal which took the Retards into the lead to victory.
The tempo was then stepped up as Jeremy “Concy” Constantine took a shot, but missed causing much excitement amongst the supporters. Immediately following this Jeremy saw another chance and took it - ‘firing’ the ball into the net. Retards were two nil up.
Jeremy was definitely on top form as he immediately had the privilege of taking another shot at the goal, but this time the ball was saved by Jamie’s ‘safe and sure hands’.
Martin Joshua then took a long range shot that went just wide off the goal.
Nicky John gained himself a shot that went high over the bar.
A corner was then given by David “Skipper” Lawrence of the Dream Team and this was taken by Ryan Backhouse whose pass was met by Denny Leo who in return shot wide off the goal.
Carlyn Yon saw a chance and took a shot which went only just over the bar and a roar came up from the Retards’ supporters.
Martin Henry then gave a corner which was taken by Darren Reynolds, but was stopped and fell short off the goal. In the attempt by the Dream Team to get the ball out in to the open the ball was met by Nicky John who took a shot and landed it in the back of the net. Retards were 3 nil up.
Immediately after the third goal Ryan Backhouse took another chance at scoring, but this was saved by Jamie.
Dream Team’s Errol “another Skipper” Lawrence made a good effort in his attempts to score, despite the shouting at from the Dream Team supporters – well done Errol.
The weather conditions (misty rain), appeared to be enjoyed by the players if not the spectators and both teams ‘soldiered’ on until the half-time whistle blew. Score at half-time was 3 – 0 to the Retards.
The second half began with Martin Joshua going off to be replaced by Sub – Anthony “Nails” Thomas.
Retards were in possession of the ball again and Carlyn Yon saw a chance where he took a shot, but it went past the post. This was followed by Ryan Backhouse taking a shot which also skimmed past the post.
Nicky John bounced back again and took another shot – this time landing the ball straight into Jamie’s hands.
Jeremy “Concy” did a header, but unfortunately the ball only just skimmed over the bar.
Nicky John then saw yet another chance and placed the ball just inside the corner of the net. Retards were 4 nil up.
Anthony “Nails” took a good shot, but was beaten by goalie Jamie who did some excellent saves throughout.
There were roars from the Retards’ supporters yet again as Nicky John took a shot – ‘firing’ hard at the goal only for it to hit the post and bounce back into play again.
Retards then decided to bring on Subs – Gavin “Chocolate” Yon and Adrian “Kenny” Henry and Nicky John and Denny Leo went off.
Carlyn Yon took a long range shot, but was beaten by goalie Jamie.
Jeremy “Concy” managed to get the ball on his foot and ‘hammered’ it into the goal. Retards were 5 nil up.
Immediately after the fifth goal Anthony “Nails” gained another good chance to score, but the ball went over the bar.
Dream Team’s Ian Gough then took a shot, but it went wide off the goal.
A corner was taken by Dream Team’s Darren Reynolds, but landed behind the net.
The Dream Team continued to run their hearts out and special mention must be made to Paul “Mr. Pablo” Bennett who showed some excellent footwork throughout in his last attempt to win the “Flipper” Tournament. We noticed that you hadn’t lost the touch Paul as you danced around Anthony “Nails”. Good effort by Paul and ‘Good Luck ‘ to you in your future endeavours from your work colleagues, team players and spectators alike.
Kruff Buckley put in a good effort by taking a long range shot which unfortunately went over the bar. Earlier on Kruff told his team mates that the Retards were under pressure!!
A good effort was made by Dream Team’s David “Skipper” Lawrence in the last couple of minutes as he tried his utmost to beat the goalie and score for the Dream Team, but Damien had saved the ball in good time.
The score at the final whistle was five nil. Both teams played really well and overall it was a very entertaining game.
Martin Kelson was nominated Man of the Match by referee Melvyn Moyce and linesmen.
It was a hard decision between Martin and Carlyn Yon who had also had a good game. Martin Kelson and Martin Andrews did some good defending at the back to keep the score at 5 – nil – well done!
Good Luck to the finalists next weekend and may the best team win!
See you all next Saturday at 1400 hours at the Georgetown Football Field – don’t miss the ‘mixed’ friendly game with Cable & Wireless versus the “Rest of the Island”.

The 7th running of the annual Flipper Trophy continued this weekend; the tournament is run as a dedication to the memory of Andrew “Flipper” Bennett and Sunday’s game began with the players and officials standing around the centre circle to observe a minute’s silence.
VC Milan come back from 2 down to make it into next week’s final
Two Boats Rowdies 2 v 3 VC Milan
Neil Lawrence should be given a Man of the Day award for winning the 11k run in the morning and turning out to play for the cleverly named VC Milan in the afternoon.
The action began with Tony King lobbing the ball into the area for Darren “Speedie” Henry to chase but he was beaten to the ball by Martin Bagley, the VC’s Keeper who cleared it.
The Rowdies kept up the pressure with a couple of corners and were rewarded with the game’s opening goal when Steve (PTI) Muggeridge volleyed into the bottom left corner of the net leaving Martin no chance.
VC earned a corner of their own which Errol Thomas headed clear only for “Shoe” to head the ball powerfully goal-ward but Steve Bessie, the Rowdies Keeper, was able to catch the ball.
Gavin Parr then went on a good run from right to left before shooting back towards the right of the Rowdies goal.
At the other end Johnny Stroud fired a shot from outside the box which was blocked by Martin only for the ball to loop up for Steve Muggeridge to head just wide with the goal gapping before him. “Shoe” followed this up with a quick run on the right but the ball beat him out of play for a VC goal kick. The Rowdies next corner was tipped over his own bar by Martin.
Eugene Bennett received a yellow card for deliberate hand-ball but in doing so caused Steve Bessie to juggle with the ball before he finally gained control over it.
The Rowdies doubled their lead when “Speedie” took a shot on the turn and drove the ball between Martin and his left post. The Rowdies nearly gained a third goal just before half time when Martin came for the ball at the edge of his area but missed it.
At half time while I wasn’t looking, Chocolate wrote something very rude about me in my note pad which he may regret as he will be playing in next week’s pre-final mixed game when Cable & Wireless will take on a “Rest of the Island” team; you’ll be able to read my completely biased account of how he gets on in next week’s Islander!
Billy Minto began the 2nd half running like an express-train (having brought the wrong bottle with him, he had been drinking undiluted juice at half-time), his cross from the right was met by Eugene who’s shot went just passed the VC’s post.
Cardinal Green then began the VC’s come back with a weighted pass from midfield which, once he had beaten the Rowdies off-side trap, Gavin Parr controlled with a good first touch before drilling the ball passed Steve Bessie.
After Gavin had had a pair of free-kicks blocked by the Rowdies’ wall, Cardinal floated a high cross into the Rowdies box nearly causing Julian Fuller to head into his own goal, the ball going just passed the post instead.
Steve Muggeridge then made a good run on the right sporting his new Latin text tattoo which Chris Owen informed me reads “GAY & PROUD” which begs the question why does Chris recognise such tattoos? Is he good at Latin or has he seen plenty of similar tattoos before, probably the latter as Chris comes from Brighton!
Steve then had an ambitious lob blocked by Martin.
At the other end Melvin Moyce’s shoulder-barge on Gavin Parr was enough to ensure the VC’s striker hit his shot over the bar. However Melvin’s luck ran out when he left a ball for his Keeper to collect, instead Cardinal stole the ball, taking it wide of the box and crossing it for “Dicker-boy” to head home for VC’s equaliser.
Then Martin, VC’s Keeper, spilled a Johnny Stroud cross and “Shoe” almost scored, then Steve Muggeridge tried to re-establish the Rowdies lead with a long range shot which Martin fumbled, the ball falling to “Bluecoke” who smashed it into the side-netting.
Gavin went close for the VC but Adam Robinson did enough to put Gavin off.
Eugene Bennett then nut-megged Melvin Moyce, while for the Rowdies Tony King crossed the ball for Billy to chase but the effects of his half-time juice concentrate must have worn off.
The game was won in surprising fashion; Errol Thomas took a free kick for the VC from 30 yards out which Steve “David-James” Bessie looked to have covered but the ball went straight through his outstretched arms.
Gavin Parr was awarded the Man of the Match by Referee Martin Joshua who may be pleased to know that one young lady in the crowd thought his bum was the nicest on display! (There Kelly, I told you I wouldn’t mention your name, oops, sorry!)
So next Saturday the final is between VC Milan and the Retards, the fun starts from 2pm with the Mixed Match between C&W and the Rest of the Island, followed by the Final and Presentations. So, see you at Long Beach.
