There are seven elected member seats on the Island Council.

GENERAL ELECTION
NOMINATION DAY – 30th SEPTEMBER 2008
CRITERIA TO STAND AS A COUNCILLOR
There are seven elected member seats on the Island Council.
To qualify for election as a Councillor the person must:
a. have attained the age of 21 years and either pay or is liable to pay Ascension Island Income Tax
b. be a British Overseas Territories Citizen, British Overseas Citizen or British Citizen who:
i. resides on Ascension Island
ii has resided for at least 12 months immediately preceding the date of nomination for election;
iii is registered as a voter on the Electoral Role
Disqualifications for elected membership
The Island Government (Ascension) Ordinance 2008 also states certain disqualifications for elected membership and refers to persons:
a. having been convicted of an election offence;
b. who has within five years immediately preceding the date of election, served a sentence of imprisonment of 12 months or more; or
c. who holds, or is acting in, any public office designated by the Governor; in this case Ascension Island Government Heads of Department.
