Ascension : From The Editors
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Internet Editor) 21.08.2008 (Article Archived on 04.09.2008)

Hi Readers, Sadly, an end to the Olympic coverage this week – but a Public Holiday, sun and fun still to come.

Hope to see lots of children at Fort Thornton on Saturday, for the clean up.

Best regards

The Editors (Sharon & Chris)

I read your recent article about Devils Riding School and I wondered if anyone has pictures of this and other high points on the Island.  Sisters Peak, Broken Tooth, Cross Hill, The Dew Pond, Spires Beach and Letter Box are only a few that come to mind.

Does the RAF still maintain books at each of the principal walks where one records names, dates, etc?  It used to be mandatory for new arrivals to complete 7 or 8 of these walks before they were allowed to leave.  Happy memories of a great tour 1986-89.

Very best wishes and keep up the good work with your newspaper – each page read avidly!

CONCERNING JOE PESTA

Hello and Greeting from TampaFlorida.

On the 21st of last month, my cousin, Joe Pesta, died whilst hiking in Ascension Island.  I did notice a small article about him in your paper.

Do you have any other articles which may have included him over the past few years?  Our family miss him dearly and we are trying to gather as much information as possible.

The article about him said he liked to ‘hash’.  Can you tell me what that is?  Where did he die?  Was there anyone with him?  Did he make it to the hospital?

Any information you may have would be very greatly appreciated.

Sincerely

Tom Pesta    tnnt969@hotmail.com
