Ascension : News From Two Boats School
Submitted by The Islander (Soo Matthews) 26.06.2008 (Article Archived on 10.07.2008)

Year 10 have been busy preparing for their work experience. They have prepared letters of application and CVs outlining their skills and experiences so far.

Year 10 have been busy preparing for their work experience.  They have prepared letters of application and CVs outlining their skills and experiences so far.  Waiting to hear if their applications were successful has been a tense time for the students and they are very glad the organisations are able to provide them with this experience.

Many thanks to all the organisations who are helping again this year.

I chose Interserve Stores, Base Clinic and the police because I want to have experience of how it is in an adult environment and get a taste of how it is in the real world.

I think I will develop skills in organisation and help me gain more confidence when doing practical work.

I will learn about how successful organisations work and what they do to make it such a success. I will also learn about how companies have their regulations and what they do to reinforce the rules and laws.

I am most looking forward to doing work at the clinic as I would like to become a doctor in the future and help people.

I am dreading the interview and saying something that will be inappropriate however biggest worry is being asked to do something that I now I can’t do or don’t know what to do.

I will be able to use my new skills in the future when trying to get a career.

I chose to go to the Interserve joinery, US base motor pool, the AIG carpentry sector because I want to have experience more about cars and how they work and how to make and design things for real life as a job.

I will learn how to use the tools around the workplace and how to keep safe and the safety of others around me. I will also learn how to work with others.

I am most looking forward to meeting the other people at that work placements and to work in the different work placements.

But my biggest worry is the interviews because I am not very good in talking to people and getting involved with the jobs at hand.

I will be able to use my new skills in the future when ever my car breaks down or when ever something in my house breaks I can fix it.

For my work experience placements I chose the Base Clinic, Interserve Stores, and the Conservation Centre.

I chose these places because I thought they would be good places to develop my people skills and give me a taste of a working day. Interserve is known for their long days and I feel that if I can handle that then it will not be a problem in the future

My brother works in the Stores and I would like to find out and see for myself what his work consists of. The things that I am looking forward to are meeting new people and strangely enough answering the telephone. Also I would like the chance to work with a different type of ICT. I am however dreading the interview as I am not a very confident person. I am also dreading messing up an assigned job or if I am asked to do something I have no idea about. But I guess that’s all part of the experience.

I am also going to experience work with the Base Clinic and Conservation Centre.

My hope for the future is to become a Veterinarian and these placements are the closest things to those criteria.

I would like to know how the machines work and find out a bit about medicine at the Clinic and I hope I get to ride in the ambulance. I am not really dreading anything at the Clinic although I hope I will be able to do what I am asked.

At the Conservation Centre I am dreading walking all over the place but I guess I will cope, I will get some exercise in too! I hope to learn about the wildlife around the island, get to know some inhabitants a bit better, and most importantly get to work with people who are as interested in animals as I am.

I hope that the skills I acquire will assist me in future jobs.

I chose to work at base mechanics because I want to have experience of fixing cars and other vehicle.

I think I will develop skills in mechanics because I will get experience of fixing cars.

I will learn to use different tools and other equipment. These will be different tools I will use than the tools at home.

I am most looking forward to working with big equipment. I know I won’t be able to use some of the big equipment but I can see the other workers using the big equipment.

My biggest worry is working with people I don’t know and being interviewed.

I will be able to learn new skills and knowledge like about how health and safety is used in work places.

My name is Dane Wade I am a year 10 student.

I have decided to go to Cable and Wireless Networks department, Interserve Stores and US Base Clinic. I chose these places because I want to have experiences of the medical, computing and stock management field.

The work placement that I am most excited about is going to the Networking department at Cable and Wireless. I am excited about this placement because I aspire to get a job in the ICT industry in the future.

I think that going on these placements I will help me to develop my people skills, organisation skills and experience of the working environment. These new skills learned and the experience I receive will help me in the future when it comes to me getting a real job, as I will know what to expect.

For each placement I will learn a bit about what each job entails and see how people carry out the tasks set and overcome any problems they encounter.

I am most looking forward to meeting new people, learning new skills and learning what each field of work entails. I am also looking forward to experiencing what weekdays are like outside of school.

However, I am dreading being assigned something to do, that I don’t know about or understand. Again, if I do find myself in this situation it will be a good experience because I will learn how to problem solve in the working environment.

My biggest worry is going for the interviews, as I don’t know what is going to be asked and if the answer I will give will be suitable. But I guess this is part of the experience and this fear now, will help me in years to come.

I chose the police station because I want to have experience of how the police help the community.

I think I will develop skills in handling police equipment. I will learn more about how the law works. I am most looking forward to the program, criminal investigation.

I am dreading the interviews.  My biggest worry is not waking up in time for work.

I will be able to use my new skills in the future.

I chose to work at the police station because I want to have some experience in the police as some of my family members have been operating there already.

I think I will develop skills in using police equipment and how to handle situations.

I will learn more about the law and order of Ascension.

I am most looking forward to the program which will include immigration duties, beat patrol, criminal investigation, traffic sections and duties at the H.M. Prison.

I am dreading maybe having to get up early and maybe working later than school hours.

My biggest worry is the interviewing with the people.

I will be able to use my new skills in the future when I get a real job for myself.
