Ascension : 9-A SIDE Football, sponsored by “The Saints Club”
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Internet Editor) 19.06.2008 (Article Archived on 03.07.2008)

VC2 v Saints Club - VC 2 started the game the brighter of both sides.

They took an early lead when Wayne Crowie was played in behind the Saints Club defence and calmly slotted home.  Saints Club responded well and put together a series of attacks but VC 2 Keeper Errol Thomas pulled of a number of good saves to protect his team’s narrow lead.  Saints club had possession of the ball for long periods of the 1st half and created many more chances but lacked a cutting edge.  VC 2 soaked up all Saints Club had to offer and extended their lead when Wayne Crowie once again found himself in behind the Saints Club and he scored a near replica of his first goal, to put his side 2 goals up at the end of the first half.

Saints Club continued to play attacking football in the 2nd half and was punished by a swift VC2 Counter attack, which saw Wayne complete his “Hat Trick” and put his teams 3 goals up.  Saints Club pulled a goal back through Nicky John, he weaved himself into space in the VC 2 Penalty area and hit a powerful shot for Saints Club first Goal.  The deficit was reduced to a single goal when a loose ball broke to Clayton Yon in the VC 2 Penalty area and he fired home.  Saints Club were on a roll and created more goal scoring opportunities but were denied by some quality goal keeping from Man of the Match Errol Thomas.  Any hopes of Saints Club earning points from the game were dashed when both Martin and Dave Bagley broke into the Saints Club penalty area and exchanged passes before Martin fired into the roof of the Saints Club net to seal the game for VC 2.  Final Score VC 2 4 Saints Club 2

NAAFI 2 v 2 Boats Club

NAAFI 2 were quick of the mark and set about attacking 2 Boats Club straight from the kick of.  After squandering a few opportunities NAAFI 2 went ahead, 2 boats Keeper Damien O’Bey failed to deal with a tame Gavin Pare shot which found its way into the back of the 2 Boats Club net.  NAAFI 2 continued to play the better Football and went 2 goals ahead after a well worked attack left Chris with a tap in.  NAAFI 2 finished the first half 3 goals up after Gavin Pare broke through the 2 boats defence and rounded the keeper for his second goal.

The Second half was much the same as the 1st with seemingly one way traffic.  Gavin Pare Completed his Hat Trick as he once again rounded the 2 boats keeper and finished into an open net.  NAAFI 2 kept up the pressure and completed a 5-0 thumping of 2 boats club through Capitan Steve Muggridge he followed up to score after his initial shot had been saved by the 2 boats keeper.  Final Score NAAFI 2 5 2 Boats Club 0

The Championship Decider!  VC 1 v NAAFI 1

VC 1 got of to a flyer! They went a goal up within the first five minutes of the game.  They were gifted an early lead from a defensive mix up between the NAAFI 1 defence and Goal keeper, the ball broke to Jeremy Constantine who tapped into an open net for VC 1’s first goal.  NAAFI 1 settled into the Game and played on in search of an equaliser.  VC 1 Defended well, man of the match VC 1 centre half Ryan Backhouse kept NAAFI 1’s Top Goal Scorer Geordie Peters quiet for the remainder of the half.

The Second half saw NAAFI 1 continue to search for an equaliser.  With both teams defending well most of the football took place in the middle of the pitch with no team creating any goal scoring opportunities.  Then mid way through the 2nd half the match came to life.  A Red Card was issued to VC1’s Jermaine O’Conner after he appeared to have thrown a punch at NAAFI 1 Defender Julian Fuller.  With VC 1 Down to 8 players NAAFI 1 attacked with more vigour and were denied an equaliser when VC1 Keeper Anthony George made a good save from a screamer of a shot from NAAFI 1’s Carlyn Yon.  VC 1 Made Substitutions and this saw the introduction of Steve Caswell.  Within Minutes of his introduction he turned his marker on the edge of the NAAFI 1 Penalty area and unleashed his shot which took and a deflection and finish up in the Back of NAAFI 1’s goal to seal the Game and the Champion Ship for VC 1!  Final Score VC 1 2 NAAFI 1 0
