Ascension : 9-A SIDE Football, sponsored by “The Saints Club”
Submitted by The Islander (Nathan Prince) 05.06.2008 (Article Archived on 19.06.2008)

A lot has gone on in our 9 a side league since the last results write up. “VC1” and “Saint Club’s” midweek game resulted in a draw, leaving “VC1” at the top of the table after week 6.

Week 7 saw the 9 A side league blown open after league leaders “VC1” were convincingly thumped 5 goals to 1 by “VC2” in the VC Derby match.  “NAAFI 1” claimed top spot after edging a victory against “2 Boats Club”.  Another Midweek Game for “Saints Club” saw the boys from “Georgetown” claim victory in a thrilling 6-5 game against “NAAFI 2”

Week 8

“NAAFI 1” v “VC2”

“NAAFI 1” went ahead through a Fluke Goal from “Alroy Fuller”.  The defenders Clearance from his own half beat “Martin Bagley” in the “VC2” goal to put “NAAFI 1” ahead in what was a pretty even 1st half.

“VC2” went on the attack immediately in the 2nd Half.  “NAAFI 1” soaked up the early pressure, but the sustained pressure from “VC2” soon paid off.  An overhead bicycle kick in the “NAAFI 1” six yard box from “Ashley Lawrence” gave his team an equaliser.  The game became more stretched as both teams fought hard to earn all three points.  “Cruyff Buckley” found himself in acres of space after his team had cleared a “VC2” corner kick and made a run down the left side only to be stopped by a late lunge from “VC2” Capitan and Centre Back “Wayne Crowie”.  Wayne” saw a red card for his challenge and this left “VC2” with just 8 players.  “Carlyn Yon” floated the resulting free kick into the “VC2” penalty area and the ball broke to “Cruyff Buckley” who slotted the ball home to give “NAAFI 1” the lead.  Despite going a goal and one player down “VC2” kept on fighting and earned themselves a share of the points when “Phillip Yon” saw his shot from the edge of the penalty area sail into the far left corner of the “NAAFI 1” goal.  Final Score “NAAFI 1” 2 “VC2” 2

“2 Boats Club” v “Saints Club”

“Saints Club” were quick of the mark and had “2 boats” rattled in the early minutes of the game.  They came close to taking the lead when “Nicky John” saw his shot rebound of the post.  “2 Boats Club” settled down and started to play good football.  They took the lead through “Colin (Shoe) Thomas”.  He nodded home a Cross from the left wing for his first goal.  “2 Boats” continued to play well and scored a further 2 goals to take the lead to 3 at the end of the first half.  “Chris George” was sent clear by a brilliant through ball from “Eugene Bennett” and he shot pass the “Saints Club” keeper for goal number 2.  “Chris George” turned provider for the third goal.  His cross from the left wing found “Eugene Bennett” in the 6 yard area and he tapped in to give “2 Boats” a 3 goal lead.

“2 Boats” continued to play well in the second half and scored another goal when Man of the Match “Colin (Shoe) Thomas” broke through the “Saints Club” defence and shot into the left corner of the “Saints Club” goal.  “Saints Club” managed a consolation Goal through “Gavin (Chocolate) Yon”.  He found space in the right of the 2 boats Penalty area and unleashed wicked shot and scored his team’s only goal.  Final Score “2 Boats Club” 4 “Saints Club” 1

“VC1” v “NAAFI 2”

“VC2” Took an early hold of the match and went 2 goals up quickly in the early stages of the game.  “Jermaine O’Connor” playing in the “VC1” goal pumped the ball forward and “Clayton Benjamin” got in behind the “NAAFI 2” defence and beat the keeper to the ball to head in and give “VC1” the lead.  “VC1’s” Second goal came by way of a penalty kick.  The Penalty was awarded when Man of the Match “Adam Robinson” was judged to have handled the ball in his Penalty area.  “Jermaine O’Connor” made the long trip from his goal to convert the penalty kick.  “NAAFI 2” reacted well to going 2 goals down and started playing some good football in an attempt to find a way back into the game.  The leagues top goal Scorer “Gavin Pare” made a run in behind the “VC1” defence and played a ball across the 6 yard box to find “Darrell Punch” who tapped in to reduce the deficit.  “NAAFI 2” continued to pressure the “VC1” goal and tied the game when “Steve Muggeridge” shot into the Far Right Corner of the VC1 Goal From the just outside the left of the “VC1” Penalty area.

Having Tied the game late in the first half “NAAFI 2” Carried this momentum into the 2nd half and went on the attack from the get go.  “Gavin Pare” Increased his goal tally when he was sent clear and beat the VC1 Keeper to put his side ahead.  “VC1” went a further goal down when Keeper “Jermaine O’Conner” Parried an “Adam Robinson” header and saw it rebound into his net of his own defender “Cardi Green” for “NAAFI 2’s” 4th goal.  “VC1” Tried to get back into the game and attacked the “NAAFI 2” side in search of a goal.  “Steve Caswell” chased a through ball and finished his chance to reduce the goal deficit to one and give his team a slim chance a salvaging some points from the game.  But with “VC1” chasing the game “Gavin Pare” took advantage of the extra space given to him and punished “VC1” by scoring his 10th goal of the season and sealing a well earned victory for “NAAFI 2”.  Final score “NAAFI 2” 5 “VC1” 3.
