Ascension : Ascension Day Fair Craft Show
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Internet Editor) 15.05.2008 (Article Archived on 29.05.2008)

Thank you to everyone who helped in any way at making this year’s craft show twice the size of last years.

Thank you to everyone who helped in any way at making this year’s craft show twice the size of last years. There was all sorts to see – from children’s drawings of Mr Hill to intricate seed mats.  Peoples’ talents can surprise us all.  Some of the entrants were only 2 years old! So this is a show for all ages and both genders!  The best chocolate cake, (competing with the adults) was won by an 8 year old boy and went on to make a great price at the Auction!

Amongst the many paintings and pictures, there were hand made watches and home-grown vegetables on display just to show what people can produce in their spare time. All the work entered was anonymous and the judging was quite fair with certain judges having to step back quietly in the classes that they had entered.

My thanks go to all those who entered and especially those who worked behind the scenes to make it happen. In particular to the Staff at Two Boats School for their support. The Rainbow Leaders for the work they did to encourage the young girls with their entries. Interserve for the children’s prize money.  Bank of Saint Helena for the Prize for best photograph. Ms Matthews for sponsoring some of the classes. Helen Owen and Linda Yon for helping to make sure everything was ready when it needed to be.

The all important judges who undertook the difficult task of carefully analysing all the work, Michael and Elizabeth Hill, Derrick Guild, Jenny Duncan and Canon Clive. Anyone else I may have forgotten.

Once again there were many positive comments on the day and afterwards that make it all worthwhile.  I won’t be around next year to sort this out, but if you believe that talents of all sorts should be encouraged and promoted I am sure there are enough of you to pull together another even better show next year.

There are still some secret crafters out there – keep practicing for next year!
