Both teams started the game passing the ball well but cancelling each other out with some good defending.

Saints Club v VC2

Both teams started the game passing the ball well but cancelling each other out with some good defending.

Ashley Lawrence broke the deadlock when he collected the ball on the left wing turned inside and shot back across the Saints club goal for VC2’s first goal.  Saints club answered immediately with a goal of their own.  Good passing from the restart sent Nicky John clear and he calmly slotted home the equaliser for the Saints Club.  Phillip Yon got in behind the saints club back line and lobbed the ball over the advancing saints club keeper to score VC2’s second.  But once again Saints club answered right back by earning a free kick in the VC2’s half.  VC2 failed to clear to the free kick and the ball broke to Saints Club’s Martin Joshua who fired home.  Saints Club took the lead for the first time in the game when VC2’s Malcolm Greentree handled the ball in the penalty area and Leroy Fowler stepped up to convert the penalty.  Saints club finished the half a goal up.

VC2 began attacking Saints club right from the start of the second half and earned themselves and equaliser when Man of the Match Errol Thomas headed home a corner from the left.  This sparked Saints club into action and they restored their lead when Anthony Thomas Turned into space on the edge of the box and followed up to score after his first attempt was blocked.  Martin Joshua gave Saints Club a 2 goal cushion when once again the ball broke to him in VC2’s penalty area and he fired home his second goal of the match to give Saints Club a 5-3 lead.  VC2 battled hard and attacked the Saint’s club goal needing to score 2 goals to take something from the match.  Errol Thomas pushed up on the saints club the defence and headed home a long throw from the left to set up a tense finale.  But Saint’s Club hung on and took all 3 points from the game.  Final Score “Saints Club” 5, “VC2” 4

VC1 v 2 Boats Club

VC1 got on top of the game early in the first half with some good clean passing.  They took the lead when Steve Caswell got in behind the 2 Boats defence and scored the first goal of the match.  VC1 were gifted their Second goal.  2 boats keeper Damien O’Bey miss kicked a free kick straight into the path of Steve Caswell who then lobbed the keeper for VC1’s Second.

The second half saw 2 Boats club on the attack for the majority of the half.  But VC1 defended well and prevented 2 boats club from scoring.  Jermaine O’Conner sealed the game for VC1 late in the half when he walked through the 2 boats defence and scored on his second attempt after seeing his initial effort hit the post.  Paul Fuller of 2 Boats Club was awarded the Man of the Match.  Final Score “VC1” 3 – “2 Boats Club” 0

NAAFI 1 v NAAFI 2

Both teams were on a mission to prove who the better NAAFI team was.

NAAFI 2 drew first blood when Capitan Steve Muggeridge saw his miscued cross from the right wing sail into the Far corner of NAAFI 1’s goal to give NAAFI 2 a narrow lead at the end of the first half.

NAAFI 1 were gifted an equaliser early in the Second half when the NAAFI 2 left back headed a cross into his own net.  Geordie Peters raced clear to score and earn the lead for NAFFI 1 but this was cancelled out when Steve Muggeridge and Gavin Par exchanged passes on the edge of the NAAFI 1 penalty area and Steve went clear to equalise for NAAFI 2.  Geordie peters once again went clear after some sloppy play from NAAFI 2 and he found the back of the net to restore NAAFI 1’s lead.  NAAFI 2 battled hard and attacked NAAFI 1 with everything they had left.  They were rewarded with an equaliser after a Pass from Man of the Match NAAFI 2’s Adam Robinson found Gavin Pare on the right side of NAAFI 1’s penalty area.  He controlled the ball well and fired across the keeper and into the far corner of the net for NAAFI 2’s Equaliser.  Final score “NAAFI 1” 3 “NAAFI 2” 3.

This concludes the first round of the 9 a side tournament.  VC1 has opened up a 4 point lead at the top with the closest challengers being NAAFI 1… Please see results table below.
