The season opener saw “NAAFI 1” square up against “Saints Club”. Much of the First half was spent with both teams cancelling each other out. Man of the Match “NAAFI 1’s” Julian Fuller breaking up most of the Saints Club Attacks.
“NAAFI 1” went ahead late in the first half with a well worked goal. “NAAFI 1’s” Dennis Leo sending a pinpoint cross to the back post for Robert Yon to head home. The goal seemed to fire Saints Club into action and soon after the restart. Alwin Henry “NAAFI 1’s” Goal keeper allowed Nicky Johns shot to pass through his hands and into the goal dislocating a finger in the process.
The second half saw changes within both teams. “NAAFI 1” outfield player Geordie Peters replaced the injured Alwin in Goal and Left Winger Leroy Hudson was also replaced. This saw the introduction of Alan Essex and Cruyff Buckley. “Saints Club” also rotated players. Corey Anthony was taken from Goal and placed in the centre of the midfield for a straight swap with Martin Joshua.
The Second half began with a wave of attacks from “NAAFI 1”. Cruyff Buckley chased down a ball that “Saints Club” had failed to clear and the ball went in of Cruyff after a brave Challenge with “Saints Club” Keeper Martin Joshua for NAAFI 1’s 2nd Goal. “Saints Club” pushed on to find an equaliser and created a few opportunities but Geordie Peters pulled of a number of good saves to keep “NAAFI 1’s” lead intact. With “Saints Club” chasing the game, this left their back line exposed, and substitute Alan Essex produced a superb individual display of ball control to get in behind the “Saints Club” back line and find himself one on one with “Saints Club” keeper Martin Joshua, who he also rounded but was brought down by a desperate challenge from the keeper. Carlyn Yon stepped up to convert the Penalty grabbing the third Goal and the Victory for NAAFI 1.
Game 2
The Second Game of the Weekend was contested Between “VC 2” and “2 Boats Club”. A game a few Chances and no goals - down to some great defending especially by Man of the Match VC 2‘s Robert Bedwell and 3 disallowed Goals. The Closest attempt on Goal in the First Half came from Duane March after he rounded VC 2’s Right Back Malcolm Greentree outside the box and fired his shot against VC 2’s Crossbar. The First of the disallowed goals came as VC 2’s Wayne Crowie crossed a great ball for Ashley Lawrence to finish well only to be judged offside by the linesman.
The Second half was much the same with the Cross Bar denying “2 Boats Club’s” Colin Duncan a great goal. The second disallowed goal came after a Long Ball from 2 Boats Keeper Damien O’Bey sent both Collin Duncan and Duane March Clear after a Challenge with VC 2’s Keeper Martin Bagley Colin Duncan tapped the ball into the back of the net, but the Linesman deemed the earlier challenge on the keeper a Fowl. A 2 Boats Club corner was turned into VC 2’s Net but the Ball was judged to have had gone out of play and curled back in before being turned into the goal resulting in the third disallowed goal. Ashley Lawrence was presented with a great opportunity to snatch a victory for VC 2 with the last play of the game he was sent clear and found himself one on one with the “2 Boats Club” keeper but his effort was saved and the Game ended in a Goal less Draw.
Game 3
The Third a Final Game saw VC 1 Meet NAAFI 2.
The first half began with wave of attacks by VC 1 but were let down by quality of the final ball. Some great defending by Man of the Match NAAFI 2’s Adam Robinson ensured that his team didn’t fall behind early on in the game.
The First Goal of the game was produced after NAAFI 2’s Steve Muggridge played a great ball to split VC 1’s Defence and send Striker Pete Edwards clear and he calmly finished in the bottom right corner of VC 1’s goal. The first half ended after a number of VC 1 attacks were broken down by some great NAAFI 2 defending.
The Start of the 2nd half began in the same way as the first ended with VC 1 on all out attack and some great NAAFI 2 defending and brilliant saves from Keeper Dennis Stroud ensuring that his team didn’t concede an equaliser. VC 1’s attacking play was soon rewarded when VC 1 Striker Steve Caswell picked up a ball on the edge of the box turned his marker fired his shot beyond NAAFI 2 Keeper Dennis Stroud. NAAFI 2 responded with a few attacks of their own after some great midfield play from centre men Troy Bennett and Steve Muggridge. VC 1 continued to attack as this seemed their best method of defence. A last ditch attack saw Clayton Benjamin race clear and beat the NAAFI 2 Keeper to grab the game for VC 1.
