Ascension : FIRST ASCENSION ISLAND SCOUT GROUP Submitted by The Islander (Nathan Prince) 10.04.2008 (Article Archived on 24.04.2008)
Mr. Phil Reynolds - It`s with regret that we announce the death of Mr. Phil Reynolds in the UK last week.
Those folk who remember Phil working for CSO on Ascension back in 1973 will know that it was he that first started the Scout Group.
Phil was the Group Scout Leader of the 1st Winchester Scout Group and when he arrived on Ascension just after the 1973 World Scout Jamboree, decided that Ascension needed it`s own Scout Group.
After making enquiries at Scout HQ in London, eventually on January 15th 1974, Phil accepted the Cub Scout Promise from 20 Cub Scouts and 14 Scouts to bring the First Ascension Island Scout Group into existence.
Phil kept in touch over the years following with interest how we all got on and we were fortunate to meet up with him in 1996 at Baden Powell House in London during our 1996 Discovery Expedition.
He was back in touch with photos and information to make sure we celebrated the Group`s 25th anniversary back in 1999.
He passed away in the UK after a short illness and our condolences go to his son Phillip and family.
I`m sure he`s looking down on us now and can only feel a huge degree of pride in the legacy that he started and nurtured which is today`s Scout Group.
