Sunday 2nd March 08, St. Mary’s Church Ascension Island, was packed to capacity of Mothers, Children and Fathers all came to celebrate the special service of Mother’s Day.

A total of 40 children and 128 adults were in attendance.  This included the 1st Ascension Girlguiding Unit.

The service was conducted by Fr. Clive and with the instruments all in tune the church band, Johnny Green, Alwin Henry, Kerry Lawrence and Clarence Roberts led the congregation with the first hymn which was, All Things Bright and Beautiful.  Following this was the introduction of the service with more hymns and the song Medals for Mothers (Lyrics by Daniel O’Donnell) was the one that brought a tear to ones eye.  At a time like this age doesn’t matter when you shed a tear because at the end of the day without your mother we would not be here.  In Fr. Clive’s speech he explained our Mothers are special people and no matter our age we must not forget this.

Shalane Thomas and Gemma Yon (Guides) read out prayers to suit every mother on earth or who has passed on.   Fr. Clive blessed the daffodils and during the distribution of them the band played Mother of Mine (Lyrics by Lil Jimmy Osmond).

The service concluded with the hymn Colours of Day.  Refreshments were served in the church and photos were taken of the children in front of the Altar in remembrance of such a special day.

The celebrations of Mother’s Day did not end here, Two Boats Club had organised their traditional Mother’s Day Special Treat of tea and cakes for the afternoon which was followed by a disco.
