Ascension : Kids Klub

O.K. a little history lesson for you all this week. Over 3 years ago I was approached by the Islander to help them out.  They wanted something to expand their readership and to encourage younger readers of the islander.  So Kids Klub came along.  I think I achieved their aims – something for young people, fun, jokes, news, we even had competitions!  It started out rather basic – I wasn’t so hot on the computer and some weeks it really was down to a glue stick and scissors to add pictures to the pages and physically getting in the car and driving to Georgetown to drop papers under the door in the dark hours of night!   To begin with I covered the activities and groups that you children attended on the Island including Rainbows and Scouts.  There were Creature Features staring the Islands animals; Centipedes, land crabs and the Donkeys among others, with facts and fun that all had to be researched.  Researching Football had to be the biggest challenge for me – to condense it into one page, but being the World Cup it had to be done!

I even set a challenge as to where I was writing the islander from one week – my home town Penrith in the Lake District – and yes – some of you did your research and guessed correctly!

On occasions I would get Editors phoning me up asking where the page was and once I did actually forget and being so late, thought I could get away with recycling an old page – I did get caught out with that when a reader from the U.K. actually contacted me to say that they had seen that page before!  Do you know which one it was?

How many of these do you remember?   Look through this wordsearch for some of the titles I have covered.

April Fool                                             G8                                                       Revision tips

Arctic                                                   Green Mountain/National Park  Turtle

Colouring comp                                    Harry/Potter                                         V.E. Day

Commonwealth Games             Live8                                                    Wimbledon

Dr Who                                                NASA/site

Falklands war                                       Queens 80th birthday

Fish                                                      Queen Atlantis

Football t-shirt comp                            Ramadan

Fruit and veg                                        Remembrance Day

I started with a history lesson, I will end on a little lesson of common courtesy.  If someone does something, especially if you have asked them, is it not manners to say Thank You or even acknowledge a helping hand?

(Apparantly those in charge do not see the Kids Klub as a worthwhile contribution to the Islander).

Therefore; Sorry Kids.

I’m signing off.

Sarah
