Ascension : Conservation Weekly - BLACKFISH
Submitted by The Islander (Conservation Office) 31.01.2008 (Article Archived on 14.02.2008)

There are still large numbers of blackfish washing up on Ascension’s beaches.

The cause of the die off is unknown, but the Conservation Department is researching the problem.  Samples of the sick blackfish will be taken and sent away for analysis.

In the meantime, you can help by reporting dead fish strandings to the Conservation Department at x6359. We need the following information:

date, location, species, number of dead fish, condition of fish (e.g. freshly dead, rotten, skeletons), observer, GPS location in eastings and northings. Don’t worry if you can’t provide all of the information, even a little will be helpful. We appreciate your help and will do our best to keep you informed about what we learn.

REMINDER: If you are going to be moving or removing soil, rocks, clinker, or other surface material for any project, you must request permission from the Conservation Dept. before doing so. Thank you!
