Ascension : Conservation Submitted by The Islander (Conservation Office) 13.12.2007 (Article Archived on 27.12.2007)
This tiny juvenile land crab was found by Stedson Stroud last week near Green Mountain.

The crab had a carapace length of 17.2 mm, which is quite small. This discovery is good news because it means that the land crabs are still having some breeding success on the island. Soon, the land crabs will start to make their journey from Green Mountain and NASA Road towards North East Bay. Please take care to avoid running over the crabs whilst driving.
In other news, two new reports of dead fish have been reported on Ascension: one near Porpoise Point (primarily blackfish), and another near SE Bay (blackfish and grouper). The Conservation Dept. would be very grateful for reports of dead fish (groups of 20+) from fishermen and beach users. Please report the following information: location of fish, date discovered, species, number of dead fish, condition of fish (freshly dead, rotting, etc.). You can report your information to the Conservation Dept. by calling x6359. Your help is very much appreciated.
