Ascension : Ascension Island Advisory Group News Submitted by The Islander (Nathan Prince) 13.09.2007 (Article Archived on 27.09.2007)
a member of the Ascension Island advisory group, I remain interested in the issues that concerned me as an elected representative:
As Taxpayers on single status contracts requested the option of renting property on Ascension, outside of their employment contract, to accommodate family or partners. I believed this to be a justifiable request and one that should be taken forward and supported as it clearly has the potential to improve quality of life and enhance human rights on Ascension. The FCO, Governor and the Administrator disagree, and continue to oppose any suggestion or advice on change of policy or legislation that will permit the option of renting property on Ascension outside of employment contract. By refusing to agree the necessary policy and legislation change that will permit renting outside employment contract, the FCO is creating a framework, with additional restrictions and limitations, within the framework set out by Lord Triesman in his letter of 19 January 2006 for the people of Ascension to work within.
The letter on the previous page is further evidence of how democracy on Ascension was strangled by the “UK Government” and dissolved.
