Ascension : From The Constable's Desk

The Police have received a number of complaints concerning Loud Music, whereby music is being played in vehicles travelling through Residential areas at such a volume that it causes disturbance to the residents.

The main area of concern is Georgetown especially at weekends during the early hours of the mornings when the functions are closed, as groups of people tend to gather at the Pier Head.

Loud Music being played from Vehicles travelling in Residential Areas and at the Pier Head has being an on going problem.  To help resolve this problem a policy has been implemented with the following strategy:

Ø      As a proactive measure vehicle’s travelling through Residential Areas especially Georgetown, or vehicles parked at the Pier Head playing music at such a volume which could be of an annoyance to the Public will be stopped / approached and the driver will be advised to reduce the volume.  Any Person not adhering to the advice given to them will then be reported for prosecution.

Ø      If a complaint is received regarding Loud Music the person responsible will be dealt with under the Summary Offences Ordinance which states: no person shall play any musical instrument, radio or sound reproducer in any Public Road or Street to such a volume as to be annoyance to the public.

Ø      An Advisory Sign has being erected at the Pier Head to this effect.

It is not our intention to stop persons from playing music for their own enjoyment, but we would appreciate it being played at a reasonable volume and for consideration to be given to those who are having their rest as residents should not by any means be disturbed for no apparent reason.   So lets all work together as a Community in trying to solve this continuing problem.

We look forward to your co-operation with this sensitive matter and trust that you will show respect and consideration for others.

Finally we have observed that some drivers are not adhering to the Speed Signs which are placed around the Island.  These signs are erected for a purpose and especially for keeping our Roads safe for all Road Users.  Therefore I would appeal to those drivers concern to reduce their speed to the speed limits and take into account what could be the consequences of their irresponsible actions not only to themselves but to others.

Have a safe and quiet week
