Ascension : ONE BOAT TIP – DRUM CRUSHER
Submitted by The Islander (Ascension Island Government) 05.07.2007 (Article Archived on 19.07.2007)

In February 2006, a capital proposal went before the Capital Investment Board to install a Drum Crusher at One Boat Plant Yard. The proposal was approved and last Thursday the Administrator crushed the first drum.

It has been known for some time that One Boat Tip will eventually be filled to capacity and will no longer be used as such.   Therefore the purpose of the drum crusher is to prolong the life of the Tip.

Drums were usually flattened with the caterpillar loader/bulldozer, but the downside of this is that plant wears unnecessarily and it only partially achieves compaction and does not use the tip in the most efficient way.

However, the drum crusher is now in operation and any remaining drums at the Tip will be recovered and crushed.

Long Live the Tip!
