Ascension : From The Constable's Desk
Submitted by The Islander (Police Ascension) 08.02.2007 (Article Archived on 22.02.2007)

On behalf of the Ascension Island Police Detachment I would like to welcome David Bellamy and his partner Anne Stuart who arrived on the Island on Monday 05 February.

CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATOR TRAINER

On behalf of the Ascension Island Police Detachment I would like to welcome David Bellamy and his partner Anne Stuart who arrived on the Island on Monday 05 February.

David is a Crime Scene Investigator Trainer, serving with the Kent Police.  Anne is also an Operational CSI Officer with the Kent Police.  During the training Anne, has agreed to assist with the practical sessions.   The training will be a five day course which is aimed to develop the Officers in Crime Scene Investigations, thus enabling them to keep abreast of modern techniques, evidence gathering, and production of scene examination statements and giving forensic evidence in court.

The main core subjects of the course will consist of the following:

  • Basic introduction to forensic science, forensic science intelligence and evidence types.
  • Theoretical and practical training in seizure of exhibits.
  • Theoretical and practical training in the recovery of intelligence and evidence from individual (victims and suspects).
  • Theoretical and practical training in initial Crime Scene Management with regard to stabilizing and controlling the scene , initial evidence preservation and contamination issues.

David will also be advising on the upgrading / purchasing of equipment which is much needed to enable us to be successful in our investigations.

David and Anne will be delivering three days training here before travelling to St Helena, on 08 February to deliver the same training to the Police Officers there. On their return in March we will receive the remainder of training before they head back to the UK.

We would like to take this opportunity of thanking David for delivering the training which will be beneficial to the Officers and the development of the Service, also special thanks to Anne in assisting with the practical sessions.  We hope that they will enjoy their stay both here and St Helena.

LITTER

I would like to mention that it has been noted that some person(s) have been depositing litter at the Exiles Club Premises. I would appeal to those persons responsible to refrain doing so. The area has become unsightly with litter strewn around. There are sufficient litter bins in the are area and you are advise to use them.  Anyone caught depositing Litter will be dealt with accordingly and could be fined up to a sum of £100.

BICYCLES

There are a lot of bicycles are here on the Island, so I would like to remind those of you that riding your bicycle during the hours of darkness, that it must be fitted with a white light to the front and a red reflector at the rear. Riding at night without lights is very dangerous practice because you can not be seen properly.  This can result in a serious accident whereby you or someone else can be injured.

PARKING

Concerns have been raised regarding vehicles parking along the road near the main entrance to Two Boats School during school hours.   The road in that particular is narrow, forcing pedestrians onto the road. This is dangerous for those children who are walking to and from home.  Persons taking children to or collecting them from school are asked to use the top Car Park (past the cattle grid); this will allow the children to have space to walk home safely on the side of the road without any obstructions.

Have a safe week
