OK, so it is still November – just… Now is the time, if you haven’t already, to get out your advent calendars and write your letter to Santa and convince him that you have been really good this year – you don’t want any klinker left in your stockings do you.
Germany in 1890? – and not that long ago there wasn’t such a thing as a chocolate advent calendar! The special advent calendars are to count down to Christmas and are there as a reminder that you have to get ready for Christmas – not just buying presents but to think about what Christmas is all about. Traditionally Advent calendars have one window to be opened for each day, from the first day in December to Christmas Eve. Inside each window is a picture, having something to do with Christmas – perhaps a star or an angel.
As we start to think about getting ready for Christmas – how about making your own Advent calendar, either with a large piece of paper and pictures cut from old Christmas cards or this idea with using small boxes like matchboxes.
1. Glue 24 matchboxes together as shown.
2. Cover the top and sides with Christmas paper.
3. Number each box – either in order or jumbled up.
4. Put a sweet, a tiny toy or a Christmas picture
in each box.
- Open one box each day.
Germany that they make to celebrate the start of Advent.
