Ascension : Duties of Drivers to Report Road Traffic Accidents Submitted by The Islander (Nathan Prince) 12.10.2006 (Article Archived on 26.10.2006)
Section 28 of the Road Traffic (Ascension) Ordinance has been amended so that the obligation to inform the police of an accident applies in a wider range of circumstances than previously.
Under the new law, the section applies to you if you are the driver of a motor vehicle which is involved in a road accident which results in:
· damage or injury to any person, vehicle, or animal; or
· any damage is caused to any property which does not belong to you.
If the section applies to you, you MUST:
- stop the vehicle and give your name and address (and that of the vehicle owner if that is not you), and the vehicle registration number, to any person who has reasonable grounds for requiring it;
- if you do not give your details (including if that is because there is no-one there to give them to), report the accident to the police as soon as is reasonably practicable and in any event within 24 hours.
The above is a summary of the law, including the effect of the change; the full text of the law is available from the address below, or by consulting a Lay Advocate.
