Ascension : Blasting Operation - A Success
Submitted by The Islander (Gavin Yon) 06.07.2006 (Current Article)

Shortly after the arrival of the Queen Atlantis in January, it was discovered that below the surface of the water near the landing were rocks that could be a hindrance to the boat due to the modified draft.

Shortly after the arrival of the Queen Atlantis in January, it was discovered that below the surface of the water near the landing were rocks that could be a hindrance to the boat due to the modified draft.

It was then decided to remove the rock outcrop by using explosives.

Under the Supervision of Patrick Benjamin (First Shot Firer), the Blasting Team (Divers: Martin Buckley, Martin Joshua, David Beard & Carl Thomas, & Larry Francis – Site Foreman on shore), carried out the operation last Wednesday - 28th June.

There were three blasts in total and the rock obstructions were removed.

As a result of the operation’s success, the Queen Atlantis can now safely come along side the landing steps enabling passengers to board & disembark directly.

The Team should be commended for their expertise and professional approach to an operation carried out in difficult sea conditions, to exacting safety requirements and a timetable dictated by shipping operations and of course the weather.
