Ascension : From St Mary's Church Submitted by The Islander (Clive & Jenny Duncan) 15.06.2006 (Article Archived on 29.06.2006)
Dear Friends, I believe it is good practice to ask questions when we are unsure of something. I had a good experience of this at our Vestry Meeting on Sunday 28 May when a young member in the congregation asked me a question relating to the nomination of Churchwardens.
Her question was 'why must a Churchwarden be 21 years of age". Although it was put to me at the end of the meeting I admire her greatly for putting it which shows that she was interested in what was going on.
There are a number of things which surround us in our daily lives. A number of these perhaps we know little or nothing about. One thing springs to mind for me and that is , in spite of the fact that I worked with a friend of mine in his mechanic repair workshop, my knowledge on car repairs is very limited. If I was asked today to explain how the different parts in a car work my answer will have to be 'I don't know'. Looking back I can say that my best friend did try to teach me but I failed to take advantage when I had the of opportunity to question him more on the workings of the car hence my very limited knowledge on that type of work .
We were told in the Gospel on Sunday that Nicodemus went to see Jesus because he had something lacking in his life. Jesus tried to teach him but Nicodemus found it difficult to understand which led him to question Jesus.
There is a lesson we can learn from this and that is not to be afraid to ask questions whenever we have the opportunity to do so.
Have a pleasant week.
Canon Clive.
