Ascension : DRIVING THROUGH DRINK OR DRUGS - YOU’VE TOO MUCH TO LOSE!
Submitted by The Islander (Gavin Yon) 15.12.2005 (Article Archived on 29.12.2005)

Drink Driving is a sad fact of life in today’s society but is so easily avoidable.

Drink Driving is a sad fact of life in today’s society but is so easily avoidable. As well as the emotional and human costs of drink driving there are also major implications for all motorist who drink and drive even if they do not injure or kill anyone.

So far for this financial year we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of drink related Road Traffic Accidents, in fact the conviction rate of drink drivers has risen by 500 %, in light of this statistic the detachment took a proactive stance by conducting a drink drive campaign utilising a dual approach of enforcement/vehicle checks and an educational program.  The aim of this program was to try and promote sensible drinking therefore reducing the number of alcohol related Road Traffic Accidents.

Commencing the month of August 2005 a series of random road side safety checks were conducted, these checks significantly reduced the number of accidents that were occurring on a regular basis.  Combined with the educational program consisting of posters, leaflets and a power point presentation which was delivered to the various organisations on the island.

The police will continue to carry out road side vehicle checks whereby checks will be made to brakes, steering, exhaust and any other offences.

The Police have received some positive feed back from the public concerning the presentation, and would like to take this opportunity to thank you the public and the Companies for their time and support.

As we approach the festival season lets keep in mind the consequences of driving through drink or drugs.  If a driver is convicted of driving through drink or drugs:

  • They will have a Criminal Record

  • They will be disqualified

  • This could result in the loss of their job

  • Insurance Cost will rocket

  • Their whole life style could change dramatically

But what’s even worst is that a drink/drug driver could end up killing or seriously injuring someone else and here on Ascension the chances are that it will be someone you know– Could you live with that on your conscience for the rest of your life?.

So think before you drink drive,

if you are going out for a drink plan ahead:

Use a designated driver,

Phone a friend,

Use a taxi,

Or even walk.

REMEMBER FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS DRIVE DRUNK – THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK AND DRIVE.  YOUR ACTIONS COULD HAVE SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES.

We all would like to wish you a trouble free Christmas and a happy new year.
