ASCENSION:

The main talking point of the weather this week is the heavy showers that have been affecting the Island since Friday night. As we can see above there have been some quite high totals, so here are a few facts. It was the highest rainfall total in a week at the Airhead since the end of June 2003 and with the average total for May of 11.1mm it could be the wettest May since 1995. At the Residency it was the wettest since early November 2004. (Remembering the total here is only up to Sunday morning). In Georgetown it was the wettest week since late March 2003, and finally at Travellers the wettest week since late August 2004. Somebody up there obviously knows about the Islands water problems. It looks as though the heaviest of the showers will soon clear, but don’t put those brollies away just yet as the odd sharp shower may return later in the week.

ST. HELENA:

A fairly average week in St Helena with a good deal of cloud and some showers. Things are cooling off down there now as Autumn sets in and the weeks maximum temperature was the lowest since late December 2004.

UK:

The week started with some warm southerly winds, helping the temperature to reach 22 C on the 2nd in Central London, but by midweek cool Northwesterly winds had set in with a mixture of showers or longer spells of rain, occasionally heavy in places. The highest 24-hour rainfall total was on the 3rd with 22.4 mm falling at Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway. There were some chilly nights as well with Redhill in Surrey and Altnahara in the Highlands, both recording MS 01 C on the 3rd and 4th. The sunniest spot was reserved for Jersey on the 8th with 13.9 hours.

FALKLANDS:

A cool, breezy week in the Falklands with showers or longer spells of rain and a cold night on Wednesday when the Mercury fell close to freezing.
